His graduation project ‘Hello World’ is a radical new visual language. Designed for humanity’s future colony on Mars (thanks Elon). Chinese characters, through generations, evolved from simple literal drawings to abstract characters. What used to be a drawing a house is now two squares and four lines. ‘Hello World’ restarts the process of language creation, sped up by today’s technology. The starting point remains the same: people drawing things. But rather than hundreds of years of gradual development, Jaap uses software. He asks different people to draw a house. They become input for his software which then outputs a character for ‘house’. Ready for the language textbooks of Mars.
